`Bifurcation will not help Rayalaseema'

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI, JULY 23. A Rayalaseema activist and a member of the All India Prohibition Committee, R. Ahmed Hussain, has said that the Rayalaseema region will develop only under an integrated Andhra Pradesh and opposed the move for its bifurcation.

He told reporters here that as river waters were important for the development of any area, Rayalaseema whose main rivers like Penna and Thungabhadra had nearly dried up, had to invariably remain united with the rest of the State dependant as it was on the Krishna waters. He opined that it was unwise to seek separation of the State on the basis of regions without any regard and concern whatsoever for the flow of the rivers in the region. He reminded in this connection as how the Krishna and Godavari rivers flowed in the State across all the regions and pointed out how the river Krishna entering the State in Telengana traversed through Rayalaseema before reaching sea via coastal Andhra.

Opinion poll

Mr. Hussain is on the job of trying to find the pulse of the people vis-a-vis the movement for statehood for Rayalaseema. He said he would shortly convene a meeting at the end of the opinion poll to discuss the issue threadbare and prepare an action plan. He attributed the backwardness of Rayalaseema to the apathy of successive governments and wanted constitution of statutory regional board to take up pending irrigation projects and to exploit its rich mineral wealth.
