Panel to look into contract labour issue

HYDERABAD, JULY 23. The Government will appoint a three-member committee of senior officials from the Centre for Good Governance to go into the issue of contract labour in the State.

This was stated by the Minister for Revenue, D. Prasada Rao, in the Assembly today. The committee recommendations would be accepted in toto. M. A. Gafoor (CPI-M) said the Government and its agencies had engaged about three lakh people as contract labour. None of them enjoyed proper service conditions, he said, adding that vocational teachers were not given salaries for the past 36 months. He demanded that their services be regularised. K. Atchan Naidu (TDP) sought to know the new Government's policy on contract labour. The Minister stirred apprehensions among the members, with his statement that the Government was empowered to discontinue the contract by giving a one-month notice.
