Temporary power cut

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Transco has announced a temporary power cut in some areas following loss of an installed capacity 874 MW. However, the Transco has promised to resume normal supply as early as possible. The loss is due to tripping and withdrawal of some units for maintenance works.

`Power pacts are high-priced'

Hyderabad: The Government has, by an order, termed the power purchase agreements (PPAs) of GVK, Spectrum and Lanco "onerous" and "cost-prohibitive." It said a scrutiny of PPAs had been taken up as the Government was for ensuring supply of reliable and uninterrupted power at least possible cost.

Student falls to death

KURNOOL: A student of residential school, B. Siva Sankar, fell down from the roof of the hostel at Saibaba Nagar in Nandyal town on Thursday night. According to reports, the student who was sleeping on the terrace of the building of Srisaila Public School got up as it was raining and when he was coming down, he accidentally fell down and died.

Salary dues for anganwadi

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday directed officials to release salary arrears of 1.1 lakh anganwadi workers and that orders to this effect be sent to districts. He also directed officials to submit a report on the problems of anganwadi workers and helpers, a press release issued by the Chief Minister's Office said here. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union has welcomed the decision. P. Roja, general secretary, in a statement, hoped that the Government would concede other demands.The demands were scrapping of GO 20 and easing salaries from the budgetary control.

BC leaders meet Manmohan

HYDERABAD: A 15-member delegation of the Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes Welfare Association on Friday called on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi and discussed 50 per cent reservations for OBCs in State Assemblies and Parliament and sought a bill to this effect. A press release issued here said the delegation pressed for implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations.The delegation, led by R. Krishnaiah, wanted a BC commission, with powers to initiate action against officials violating facilities provided for OBCs. Dr. Singh, according to the release, said the demands would be discussed at Central level. It called for a separate Central department and budgetary allocation of Rs.2,000 crores for the welfare of OBCs.

Rajaka Sangham seeks quota

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Rajaka Sangham has sought inclusion of the community in `E' category of Scheduled Castes with 5 per cent reservation. It has also sought chairman's post of the Rajaka Federation for a person hailing from Telangana. A delegation of the sangham, led by J. Satyanarayana, president, which called on the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Friday demanded waiver of Rs.10-lakh loan dues of 500 rajaka societies.

Four IPS officers transferred

HYDERABAD: The Government on Friday transferred four senior IPS officers and gave new postings. On transfer, the Director-General of Police (Special Protection Force), A.K. Srivastava, was posted Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Police Housing Corporation Ltd. The Additional DGP (Sports), M. Babu Rao, was transferred and posted Additional DGP (Administration). On transfer I.J. Nagia was posted DGP (SPF). The Inspector-General of Police (Crime Investigation Department), Madan Lal, was transferred and posted IGP (Sports).

OU professor's distinction

HYDERABAD: M. Srinivas Mohan, a professor of chemistry in Osmania University (OU), has been conferred with the prestigious designation of `Chartered Scientist' by the Science Council of United Kingdom in recognition of his contribution to teaching, research and administration. He is also a fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry in London.

Dalit attacked in farm land?

VIZIANAGARAM: A Dalit of Pedavemali village in Gantyada mandal was allegedly attacked with a knife by some persons. The district secretary of the Dalit Bahujan Shramik Union, A. Uday Bhaskar, said on Friday that the Dalit, N. Ramu, a member of the union, was attacked by three persons -- D. Jagan, D. Appa Rao and D. Devudamma - in a farm land when he took exception to a land deal. The Gantyada police registered a case under Sections 323 and 324 of the IPC.

TDP member's plea to Centre

NEW DELHI: The Telugu Desam Party Rajya Sabha member, K. Rama Mohana Rao, on Friday urged the Centre to bring forward comprehensive legislation on whistle blowing so as to provide legal immunity to those who complain in public interest against Centre, State and local administration and in private sector.

Cloud-seeding brings rain?

Hyderabad: Cloud-seeding operations made a good beginning on Friday with five places in Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts, and another near Nandyal, receiving rain soon after clouds were precipitated with seed material, authorities claimed.

The extent of the gain, however, will be known only tomorrow. The secretary for the Rain-Shadow Department, M. G. Gopal, said there was good rain at the five places in Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts, but "only a drizzle" near Nandyal. The five places in Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts were identified as Venkatapur, Shahbad, Moinabad, Chevella and Farooqnagar.

The Cessna aircraft belonging to Agni Aviation took off from the Old Bowenpally airport following indications that suitable clouds were available. The aircraft fired 11 flares, five of them with calcium chloride and the rest with silver iodide. The water-bearing clouds were available at an altitude of 6,000 ft over Mahabubnagar-Ranga Reddy areas and at a height of 10,000 ft near the north of Nandyal.

The plane set out on its maiden flight at 3.15 p.m. and made a touchdown at 6 p.m.

Ghosh award for IICT scientist

HYDERABAD: Prakash V. Diwan, Deputy Director and Head of Pharmacology Division, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), has been awarded the Prof. B.N. Ghosh Oration Award by Indian Pharmacological Society and has been honoured as an `Eminent Pharmacologist.' The award will be conferred at the 37th Annual Pharmacology Conference scheduled to be held at Kolkata in January 2005, according to a press release.

Farmer commits suicide

Rajahmundry: Mounting debts forced a farmer, Alugolu Subrahmanyam (40) of Gorsapalem in the upland area Thondangi mandal in East Godavari district to commit suicide in the field on Thursday evening. He was survived by wife and four daughters.

Plea to YSR on house tax

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati town development committee has appealed to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who is scheduled to visit the temple town in the first week of August, to slash the house tax rates, which were hiked during the previous TDP rule.

The committee's chairman, P.Prabhakar Reddy, has stated in a release that the municipality had hiked taxes by 165 p.c. and 275 p.c. for domestic and commercial areas respectively, thus burdening the common man.

Review meet

NELLORE: The district Collector, B. Rajasekhar, has pleaded for special interest by officials, in respect of implementation of laws pertaining to welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes.

At a review meeting held here with officials of various departments on Friday, he wanted all pending cases, pertaining to atrocities on weaker sections, to be settled at the earliest.

BJYM grievance

NELLORE: The district unit of the Bharateeya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has questioned the attitude of Sri Venkateswara University, regarding certain key decisions. At a meeting held here on Friday, the BJYM referred to the university derecognising some degree colleges and expressed surprise that the decision was announced on July 19, when the last date for admission into first year degree classes was July 21.

Blood donated

TIRUPATI: The staff and workers of Malladi Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited at Gajulamandyam Industrial Development Area near here donated 100 units of blood at a camp conducted on the factory premises on Friday on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the group's founder chairman, M.L.N.Sastry.

Residents of the neighbouring villages also took part in the camp, co-ordinated by Rotary club of Tirupati.

BSF jawan cremated

CUDDAPAH: A jawan in the Border Security Force, Suresh Kumar Reddy, who attained martyrdom on the Assam border in an attack by Bangla Rifles, was cremated with official honours in his native village, Gonemakulapalle, in Veerapunayunipalle mandal on Friday.

The BSF officials brought the body to Gonemakulapalle today morning. Officials opened three rounds of fire in the air during cremation. The Additional SP, M. Lakshmi Reddy, Yerraguntla circle inspector, Muniramaiah and sub-inspector, Vinay Kumar Reddy, Veerapunayunipalle MRO, Sudhakar Reddy and village secretary, Nagender Rao and school students participated and consoled the slain soldier's parents.

SVU extends

date

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University has extended the last date for payment of fee towards degree supplementary examination till August 2.

The fee should be paid by a demand draft drawn in favour of `The Registrar, SV University' payable at Tirupati.

The fee details are as follows: B.A/B.Com (all subjects) Rs.185 for first year and Rs.215 for second and third years; B.Sc (all subjects) Rs.205 for first year and Rs.245 for second and third years. The fee for one subject (any degree) is Rs.100 and two subjects is Rs.165.

However, the fee will be accepted with a fine of Rs.25 till August 4, Rs.75 till August 13 and Rs.175 till August 20, a release said.

NALSAR workshop

KARIMNAGAR: NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, is organising a one-day workshop on `Environmental protection and the law' for judicial officers, advocates and Non-Governmental Organisations of Karimnagar district at the Zilla Parishad conference hall here on July 25. The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Appellant Authority Chairman, Justice I. Panduranga Rao, the NALSAR Registrar, A. Lakshminath, the District and Sessions judge, M.V.S. Krishnaji Rao, the ZP Chairman, K.V Rajeshwara Rao, and the Collector, C. Parthasarathi, will participate. The environmentalists -- Purushotham Reddy, Padma, B. Prithviraj, and K.V. Jayakumar - will present papers on the subject.

Foundation Day celebrated

KARIMNAGAR: The Insurance Workers Organisation affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) celebrated the golden jubilee of BMS Foundation Day on Friday at LIC divisional office here. The Karimnagar IWO president, K. Raghuveera Reddy, hoisted the BMS flag and observed the day as All-India `demands day'. The general secretary, G.V Krishna Mohan, sought immediate filling of all vacant posts in the LIC and also wage revision. Opposing the increase of foreign direct investment (FDI) in insurance, telecom and civil aviation sectors, he criticised the disinvestments of public sector undertakings. The joint secretary, M. Gopal also spoke.

Forum to be inaugurated

KARIMNAGAR: `People for India', the Karimnagar district forum will be inaugurated by the All-India Insurance Employees Association general secretary, K. Venugopal, at Kalabharathi in Karimnagar on Saturday. `People for India' has been formed to create awareness among people about the ill effects of globalisation and communalism.
