Vellore
By Our Staff Reporter
VELLORE, JULY 23. The Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum (VCWF) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) have opposed the replacement of thatched roofs of schools with asbestos. They reasoned that asbestos would not only result in bodily discomfort to students during summer but also cause cancer and respiratory diseases. A resolution to this effect was passed at the executive committee meeting of the VCWF and CPC held here under the presidentship of P.V. Bhupathy, vice-president of the two bodies on Tuesday. As per the resolution, the thatched roofs should be replaced with reinforced cement concrete roofs, providing raised structures with proper ventilation and easily accessible entry and exits.
Tannery pollution
The VCWF and CPC appealed to the Collectors of Vellore, Tiruchi, Erode, Kancheepuram and Dindigul to fully disburse the amounts awarded by the Loss of Ecology (Prevention of Pollution and Payment of Compensation) Authority to the farmers affected by the tannery pollution. By a resolution, the VCWF decided that it would approach the Supreme Court for applying the same mandatory directives adopted in the Bhopal gas victims award and take follow-up action in the Tamil Nadu Tannery Pollution Case. They also opposed the move to set up a leather park in Erode with proposal to permit 300 tanneries.
