HYDERABAD, JULY 23. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's stand in favour of a ban against the People's War has drawn flak from her Andhra Pradesh counterpart. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the move to lift the ban on the People's War was a calculated one by his Government to put an end to violence. It was aimed at establishing peace in the region and to facilitate smooth conduct of peace talks between the Government and the naxalites. "That the ban was not renewed by us does not mean that the naxalites would be allowed to carry weapons. If that were the case, then the faction leaders would also demand the same. We are not going to allow illegal arming of any one." As for Ms. Jayalalithaa's views "she was entitled to her opinion. I do not have to comment." He dismissed her claim that there could be a threat to her life during her visits to Andhra Pradesh which she often undertakes as irrelevant.
