Schooling under the shade of a tree

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, JULY 22. The schools here are facing a new problem now that they have started removing the thatched roofs of the classrooms following the Government's directive in the wake of the Kumbakonam school tragedy. There are no classrooms.

Many schools have been forced to conduct classes either under the shade of trees or on the verandah of pucca buildings.

The Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Higher Secondary School in Alamelumangapuram near here has a total strength of 1,900. Around 1,500 students in classes VI, VII, VIII had 15 classrooms with thatched roofs. Now with the roofs gone, the authorities have resorted to shift system to accommodate these students.

The headmaster, S. Ravi told The Hindu that classes were now being held in three shifts -- 7 to 11.30 a.m. for classes VI and VIII, 12.30 to 5 p.m. for classes VII and IX and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for classes X, XI and XII.

While class VI students have the verandah of a pucca building for a classroom, class VIII sit under the shade of a tree.
