Deepthi guides SCR into semifinals

BANGALORE, JULY 23. South Central Railway (SCR) entered the semifinals in the women's team event of the 52nd Inter-Railway badminton championships, which began at the Canara Union courts here on Friday.

It was P. Deepthi's good performance that helped SCR beat Central Railway 2-1. After her partner Swetha lost the opening singles tie to Dhanya Nair 2-11, 1-11, Deepthi, pairing with Swetha beat Central pair of Dhanya Nair and Vinaya Shetty 15-5,15-11. And, in the deciding singles, Deepthi outplayed Vinaya Shetty 11-3,11-4.

In the men's section, Northern Railway beat Eastern Railway 3-0 to make the quarterfinals. Western Railway and South Central Railway also entered the last eight stage.

The results (Team event): Men: Pre-quarterfinals: SCR bt ECR 3-1; Western Rly bt WCR 3-0; Northern Rly bt ECR 3-0; NOR bt CR 3-0; SECR bt NER 3-0; NER bt DMN 3-0; first round: NFR bt RDSO 3-0; East Coast Rly bt Rly Board 3-0; DMW w/o DLW.

Women: Quarterfinals: SCR bt CR 2-1.
