Media's role in immunization programmes hailed

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL, JULY 23. The urgent need to focus on communication inputs for strengthening routine immunisation programmes was stressed at a State-level meeting of Inter-media Publicity Coordination Committee (IMPCC), a network of media units of both the Central and State governments, here today.

Addressing the meeting, the IMPCC Chairperson, Vijay Agrawal, underlined the importance of IMPCC and said it can help make a difference. He also appreciated the role being played by UNICEF for strengthening routine immunisation in the State.

The Director of the State Public Health & Family Welfare department, Ashok Sharma, said that the media units linked with various Government agencies were

supporting the issue and added that media can play a major supportive role when it comes to polio immunization as well as strengthening routine systems.

Participating in the discussions, the UNICEF project officer, A.V. Ramani drew attention towards the "need and urgency" to focus on routine immunization. She referred to the issue of partnership of IMPCC and UNICEF and how they can together support initiatives meant to strengthen routine immunization in the State. She stressed that routine immunisation is the need of the hour.

The UNICEF Communication Officer, Anil Gulati gave a presentation on routine immunisation and emphasised that it is the most cost-effective method to protect children from the six most dreaded diseases. He said that all children before they are one-year old should receive BCG, three doses of DPT, three doses of OPV, and measles vaccine with one dose of vitamin A. Maximum efforts should be made to cover the mobile population and reach every child, especially the drop outs in inaccessible areas and urban slums, he pointed out.
