Murder probe zeroes in on new angle

By K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI, JULY 23. The terror let loose by marauders at Sriperumbudur on Friday is one among a chain of incidents in which an inter-State gang is involved, the police say.

There are different versions about the gang's identity.

A Muzaffarpur-based Bihar gang is the prime suspect. But a senior police officer feels several other gangs too adopt the same modus operandi as the one at Sriperumbudur.

For instance, he points out, the involvement of either criminals from Stuartpuram in Andhra Pradesh or Ganjarampet in Maharashtra or the Parthi gang on the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border could not be ruled out too.

Modus operandi

The modus operandi of the gangs differ. In an incident at Thiruverkadu in March and the latest at Sriperumbudur, the gangs committed murders, not resorted to usually by such gangs.

According to the officer, the same gang is suspected to have committed a robbery in Kochi a few months ago, where too there were killings. The Kerala police visited Tamil Nadu for enquiries.

Investigators also have not made much headway even after one year in a daring attack by a gang that gunned down three persons after looting a jewellery showroom in Vellore.

Reporter adds:

Kancheepuram district police are investigating the Sriperumbudur dacoity from a new angle. The Superintendent of Police, K. Prem Kumar, pointed out that the dacoities, reported at Tiruverkadu in March this year and Wallajapettai in Vellore, took place in areas where heavy vehicles coming from north India halt for 3 or 4 days to load or unload vehicles.

As some of the gangsters in Sriperumbudur spoke in Hindi, the police have decided to investigate this angle. They had taken fingerprints of 86 lorry drivers/cleaners in and around Irrunkattukottai industrial area.

Further, a gang, hailing from Bihar, was released from jail after a 10-year sentence; the involvement of this group was also being probed.
