VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 23. The Union Joint Secretary (Heavy Industry), A.K. Rath, on Friday asked the employees who had taken voluntary retirement from Central Public Sector Undertakings, to make use of the training given to them and employ themselves to augment their income.
Making PSUs viable
Addressing a meeting got up to mark the culmination of a training programme, he said that the Government had decided to downsize several PSUs to make them viable under the new economic programme and introduced attractive package to encourage people to take voluntary retirement. It had paid gratuity three times more than normal to them. But it found that most of the people squandered the money and were facing problems. ``Hundred centres were started across the country in November 2001 to implement the counselling, re-training and re-deployment (CRR) scheme to help the VRS people to take up some employment and augment their income. It has so far trained 9,300 persons and of them 40 per cent have engaged themselves in gainful employment. The 40-day training programme instilled confidence in them to take up some self-employment programme. They are now able to provide employment two persons on an average, he said.
VRS implementation
The Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels Limited (BHPV) General Manager, Raghavendra Rao, said that following the VRS implementation, BHPV had become viable and could increase its turnover from Rs.12 crores to Rs. 27 crores. He asked the employees who had taken voluntary retirement to form groups and produce material needed for BHPV. S. Appa Rao of the Hindustan Shipyard Limited said that of the 8,000 HSL employees, 2,940 had taken VRS and hoped that the training imparted by the Indian Council of Small Industries would help them find some self-employment. The Employees Assistance Centre manager, Kumar, presided. The participants were given certificates.
