`Officials should not use machinery in relief works'

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 23. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, has directed officials to ensure that earthmovers or machinery are not used while executing drought relief projects currently underway in the district.

Claiming that the work being carried out under the Sampoorna Gram Surozgar Yojana was meant to generate employment in the rural areas, Mr. Raajendiran said the relief works would be carried out through the District Rural Development Agency, the Public Works Department, the Agricultural Engineering Department and the Forest Department.

The authorities should ensure the landless agricultural labourers, for whom the scheme was aimed at generating employment, were engaged in the work.

The Collector warned of stringent action if machineries were used. Under the Sampoorna Gram Surozgar Yojana, the administration had already received Rs.2.07 crores to be given as wages to workers in addition to 11,000 metric tonnes of rice. The amount and the food grains were totally valued at Rs.8.25 crores. Administrative sanction had been accorded for the work.

Applications invited

The Madurai District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has invited applications from eligible candidates to fill the temporary posts of a district coordinator and 13 block coordinators to implement the Total Sanitation Campaign.

The centrally-sponsored TSC is being implemented through the DRDA.

All appointments will be on contract basis for 12 months. The district coordinator will be paid Rs.5, 000 per month and the block coordinators Rs.2,500 per month.

Preference will be given to those, who have worked as Block Development Officers or in similar posts but superannuated within five years or those who have a post-graduate degree in Social Work, with experience in health and sanitation works for the post of district coordinator.

Those, who have worked in non- governmental organisations, which are involved in TSC programme implementation, can also apply.

For block coordinators, those who retired in the last five years from the post of block development officers or extension officers or graduates in MSW from recognised universities will be preferred, according to a release.

Interested candidates can send their applications and biodata to the Project Officer, DRDA, Madurai, by July 30.
