Rs.65-lakh subsidy

TIRUCHI, JULY 23 . About Rs.65 lakhs will be disbursed as subsidy for farmers of Tiruchi district during the current financial year for putting up drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, according to the Executive Engineer of the Agricultural Engineering Department, B. Sundar.

The farmers would be extended 25 per cent of the project cost as subsidy for installing drip and sprinkler irrigation systems for horticultural and cash crops, he said, speaking at a farmers' grievances day meeting held here today. Sugarcane, banana, vegetable and herbal plant growers could also utilised the scheme sponsored jointly by the State and Central Governments. The Agricultural Engineering Department would also recommend credit assistance from banks in suitable cases, he said.

He appealed to the farmers to utilise the scheme in view of the prevailing drought conditions in the district.

The farmers, who wanted to avail themselves of the subsidy, could contact the office of the Executive Engineer of the Department at Ramalinga Nagar (South Extension) in Tiruchi and the offices of the Assistant Agricultural Engineering Department at Jail Corner, Indian Bank Colony and Khajapet in Tiruchi, Lalgudi and Musiri.
