NEW DELHI, JULY 23. To curb the increasing incidence of crime in the Capital, especially against senior citizens living away from their children, the Delhi police are organising special camps to gather particulars of all the vendors and junk dealers who frequent residential areas. The exercise is aimed at creating a system through which regular visitors to residential colonies can easily be distinguished from strangers. The Central Delhi police are organising one such camp along with a health check-up "mela" at New Rajender Nagar this Saturday in association with the residents welfare associations (RWAs). Apart from the health check-up of senior citizens, the police would also register details of all the hawkers, vegetable vendors, junk dealers and other people who frequent the area. The police would compile a data of their photographs and residential addresses. On the basis of this information, the RWA would issue them identity cards so that they could be distinguished from the strangers coming to the area. "It will also help the residents to easily identify the card holders," said a police officer. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi), M.M. Oberoi, more such camps would be organised to cover Karol Bagh, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road and a part of Darya Ganj. However, it is learnt that the police are facing problems in carrying out such an exercise in the Jama Masjid area due to the frequently changing profile of hawkers and vendors. Similar verification drives are being carried out in other districts too. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East Delhi), Anurag Kumar, said besides tenant and servant verification, the police were also identifying junk dealers.
