HASSAN, JULY 24. The district unit of the Karnataka State Scheduled Castes and Tribes Association has set a deadline for the rehabilitation of the Dalits of Gangooru village in Araklgud taluk of Hassan district.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, the president of the association, Kumar Kaliveer, said that the Government had neglected the Dalits of Gangooru for the past 10 years and failed to find a solution to their problems.

Mr. Kaliveer said that the association would protest against the apathy of the Government along with Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and other Dalit organisations.

He urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to visit Gangooru and look into the problems of the Dalits.

He said that to realise the seriousness of the situation, one had to visit Gangooru..

Mr. Kaliveer also said that if the Government failed to act soon, the association would organise a protest rally on August 15.

He said that the upper castes were trying to evict the Dalits who were cultivating the Government land in Hanyalu village of Ramanathapur hobli of Arkalgud taluk.

The Dalits had been cultivating the land for the past 30 years and had approached the Government for regularisation, he said.
