Decks cleared for Handri-Niva project

HYDERABAD, JULY 24. The Government today issued administrative sanction to Phase I project of Handri-Niva Sujala Sravanthi for an outlay of Rs. 1,305 crores.

The Krishna will be tapped by a lift to the tune of 14 tmcft for this phase of the long-pending project of Rayalaseema at Malyala in Nandikotkur mandal of Kurnool district. The water will be conveyed through a 216-km-long canal by eight lifts to irrigate 1.98 lakh acres in Kurnool and Anantapur districts. It will provide drinking water to 144 villages en route serving 10 lakh people.

Five reservoirs

to be formed

According to an order issued by the Government, five reservoirs will be formed under the scheme at Krishnagiri, Pathikonda, Geedipalli, Gollapalli and Cherlapalli which will be able to store 6.2 tmcft. The full-scale project of HNSS envisages drawal of 40 tmcft out of the surplus waters of the Krishna from the foreshores of Srisailam and lifting the same to a height of 203 mts for conveying through a 565-km-long canal to irrigate 6.02 lakh acres in Anantapur, Kurnool, Cuddapah and Chittoor disricts and providing drinking water to 437 villages covering 33 lakh people. The cost estimated in 1993-94 was Rs. 1,478 crores. The foundation stone was laid in 1996.
