Removal of all thatched structures under way

By Our Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL, JULY 25. Thatched structures have been removed from 81 schools in the district so far, according to sources in the district's education department.

The district administration in association with the education department has geared the official machinery to remove the structures from all private, aided and government schools before the deadline fixed by the Government.

The Collector, S. Murugaia, inspected schools in Palani taluk on Saturday and ordered officials to clear all thatched structures. The Palani municipality issued notices to several schools in the town.

Of the 81 schools, thatched structures have been removed from 19 matriculation schools, 52 primary and middle schools and 10 high and higher secondary schools. Notices have also been served to all schools having thatched structures in the district. The officials warned that the licences of those schools having such structures after the deadline fixed by the Government would be cancelled.

Meanwhile, revenue and education officials have intensified inspection of all schools.

The Public Works Department and fire service personnel were also pressed into service to check the conditions of school buildings and safety measures taken by the school authorities.

Silent rallies

Prayers and silent rallies were held at various places in the town to pay homage to the children who were charred in the Kumbakonam school fire accident.

In Theni district, education department officials are keen on removing thatched structures in all the schools by this month-end.

The district administration has identified new sites for construction of buildings for the Adi Dravida hostel, which has a thatched structure at Kokilapuram near Uthamapalayam.
