Kannur
By Our Staff Reporter
KANNUR, JULY 25. The Development Commissioner of Handlooms, Subas Pani, has called for `reinventing' the handloom sector to face the tough times ahead as the quota regime would be dismantled by next year. Addressing a meeting of handloom exporters here today to deliberate on the `needs of Kannur to fulfill the dream of achieving Rs. 1,000 crores of textile exports by 2010', Mr. Pani said that the handloom schemes were often not successfully implemented because of their standardisation. A country with diverse systems and practices called for customised and flexible schemes, he said. Cluster-specific schemes should be formulated in the handloom sector, he added.
