By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 25. A separate commission for senior citizens was among the many recommendations made at the two-day national seminar on "Dimension of ageing in India" organised by the Department of Sociology, R. B. V. R. R. Women's College, here recently.

The seminar also sought a legislation for the welfare of the aged and suggested introduction of social gerontology and/or sociology of ageing in the syllabus at the under-graduate level.

Jacob John Kattakayam, secretary, Indian Sociological Society, suggested taking up of "adopt a granny", "a friendly visitor" and "a hybrid meal on wheels" programmes for the aged.

Helpline

sought

Mohd. Sardar Ali Khan, former chairman, National Commission for Minorities, attributed the problems of the elderly to breakdown of joint family system and the new value systems.

The Commissioner, Disabled Welfare, R. Sundarvadan, said a plan of action by the State Government envisaged establishment of helpline for the elderly and supporting the efforts of NGOs in establishing old age homes and day care centres.

`Use their expertise'

Justice G. Yethirajulu, judge of A. P. High Court, called upon the Government to set up old age homes in rural areas to cater to the senior citizens of the unorganised sector. He also sought schemes to utilise the expertise of senior citizens in various fields.

K. Balasubramanian of Indian Institute of Health and Family Welfare said the percentage of the aged in population would be 20.6 by the 2050. This would require proper allocation of health care resources by the Government, he added.

Justice Ramakrishnam Raju, former chairman, Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, called for construction of old age homes on a priority basis for the economically backward.
