Haryana to regulate power supply

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, JULY 25. The Haryana Government has decided to regulate power supply in the State for sustaining Kharif crop and for meeting the drinking water requirement in the wake of drought- like situation because of the late monsoon in the region.

The current demand of electricity in the State was around 800 lakh units a day as against normal demand of 600 lakh units a day in July 2003. Although the power utilities had made arrangements for buying extra power through bilateral contracts, there was a shortage of 100 lakh units a day, according to an official note. The priorities include ensuring of power supply for drinking water purposes throughout the State besides 10-hour power supply daily for agricultural tubewells as against eight hours supply which was being given earlier for the next one week. In the urban areas power supply for lighting purposes would be ensured from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 12 noon to 5 p.m. To ensure adequate power supply, it had been decided that all industries having load of 1 MW and above would be switched off for the next one week. Industry would be asked to observe two days off in a week as per the schedule to be given by the distribution companies. The power supply to street lights would also be switched off for the next one week. The measures would also include a complete ban on the use of air conditioners in State Government offices for the next one week as well as on ostentatious use of electricity including display lights by various commercial organisations such as neon signs.

The Labour Department would ensure that the shopping hours were strictly adhered to and shops would close at 8 p.m.
