HYDERABAD, JULY 25. The German Government, which has agreed to fund the expansion of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station, is showing interest in infrastructure improvement and other works to be undertaken in the growing towns of the State. Assistance from Germany would come in two phases - identification and planning, and implementation of pilot projects to be undertaken in phases in the next two to eight years, Rachel Chatterjee, the Chairman and Managing Director of AP Transco, said on Saturday. She told a high-level meeting here that a detailed project report and proposals concerning the European Institute for Energy Research, Germany, would soon be submitted to the Government.
Pilot project
A press release by AP Transco said the nine-member German team that attended the meeting had expressed its readiness to undertake a pilot project for improvement of the distribution network, initially in the Hyderabad and Bangalore regions. The team would shortly submit its proposals to the German Government, it said, adding that the projects would be initiated after receiving its approval. The release said the team was impressed by the initiatives undertaken by the State to improve the financial performance of power utilities through a review of IPPs, reduction of transmission and distribution losses, and laying of the underground cabling system.

The team was keen to examine the existing 400 kv network, its impact on the distribution system, the reduction of losses, the improvement in voltage and the practices employed in managing the sector. Team members told Ms. Chatterjee that these measures would be help supply quality power to consumers, the release said.
