CHENNAI, JULY 25. A small group of book lovers, writers and publishers, came together today to discuss ways to improve and upgrade the Kasturi Srinivasan Library, a 43-year-old intellectual and cultural landmark of Chennai. One of the points discussed was ways to capitalise on the revival of the reading habit among people and the need to create greater awareness of the books available with the library, some of them rare. Many participants at the meeting, convened at the behest of `Chinna Kuththoosi' R. Thyagarajan, columnist, said since television's influence was on the wane and there was a growing trend in reading habits, efforts should be made to increase the library membership.
Spreading awareness
The library, run by the Triplicane Cultural Academy, should initiate a door-to-door campaign, to begin with in Triplicane and later in other localities, spreading awareness of the books available, they said. The discussion, in which a few office-bearers of the academy, including A.V. Srinivasan, N. Parthasarathy, M.P. Narasimhan and A. Krishnaswamy participated, focussed on the need to have separate sections for books meant for researchers and for others. It would help preserve the rare books, they said. One of the participants, M.C. Vasantha, a member of the Tamil Nadu Book Selection Committee (for public libraries), said the Kasturi Srinivasan Library could seek funds from the financial assistance being offered by the Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation in Kolkata. It could be utilised for purchasing equipment, including a photocopier and a computer.
Exhibitions
Holding exhibitions of the rare books and periodical meetings with writers, approaching prominent persons for donations to improve facilities and taking steps to move the library to a bigger premise, preferably of its own, were some of the other issues discussed at the meeting.
