Kumbakonam fire tragedy

Sir, — The Kumbakonam incident has shocked the entire country. The nation should have observed a day's mourning in memory of those hapless school children.

If such an incident happened in Europe or America, business and other activities would have come to a standstill. The incident should have been declared a national calamity.

With regard to the incident, only the school administration should not be held responsible. What were the neighbours doing? If concerted effort was taken to control the fire, the number of victims could have been on the lower side.

Fire safety measures

Sir, — The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had announced a relief package of Rs. 1 crore following the Kumbakonam tragedy. Instead of just extending relief package, the UPA Government should initiate measures to ensure that all the schools initiate fire safety measures in schools across the country.

Set up welfare panels

Sir, — The fire tragedy has brought into focus the attitude of the School managements towards children. In the name of discipline, most of the school authorities implement various restrictions. At least now, parents should realise the need for formulating a "check'' on the school management. Every school should constitute "Children's Welfare Committee'' and parents should be made members of these committees. Such committees should look into the amenities, safety measures and other aspects.

Phone concession denied

Sir,— In the second week of May, I booked a Tata phone impressed by their advertising blitz . When their representative told me that freedom fighter's concession was available, I submitted all the necessary documents. On May 14, the firm gave me a telephone connection with the number 55794560. However, the statutory concession promised by the company was not extended in the two bills issued by them. I hope they will immediately respond and correct the anomaly in their billing.

BSNL's Sulabh

plan a flop

Sir, — BSNL's Sulabh plan is a total failure. The access code No. 160212 always responds with `All lines engaged' or with beep tone. On July 21, I had continuously tried from 1 p.m. to 1.30 p.m and from 7.30 p.m to 8.15 p.m but could not connect to the access code 160212 and instead the recorded message went on repeating. Moreover, the complaint desk No. 1600334040 is never accessible. The BSNL should admit that their Sulabh plan had failed or rectify the fault. One should get the access No. 160212 within 3 minutes otherwise the capacity should be substantially increased.

Introduce more

bus services

Sir,— There are about 10 colonies on the eastern side of Vanasthalipuram (i.e., Shopping Complex, Rythu Bazaar, Kamala Nagar, Subhadara Nagar/High Court colony, Sarada Nagar etc.). Due to lack of frequency in bus services, residents of these colonies have to walk a kilometre to catch a bus. Kindly increase the frequency of bus service in these colonies.

S.G.V.G. Rao,

Unwarranted

power cuts

Sir, — _Nagaram village on the city outskirts, which comprises several residential colonies is subjected to daily power cut for three hours from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and thereafter irregular power cut in different spells. One cannot predict when the power supply is disconnected and when it would be restored. I request the Central Power Distribution Company to mitigate the suffering of residents in this area.

T.M.G. Nambisan,

Nagaram
