Kancheepuram
By Our Staff Reporter
KANCHEEPURAM, JULY 26. A resolution seeking the display of the Chief Minister's photograph in the council hall and the Chairman's chamber failed to evoke a unanimous consent of the Kancheepuram Municipal Council. When the Chairman, K. Arumugam, put the resolution on vote at today's council meeting, it received the support of only nine members though the strength of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the council is 18 in the 45-member council. Sambandam and his party colleagues argued with the Chairman that he should not try to stall the move by putting the resolution on vote. But the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillors came to the rescue of the Chairman (who also belongs to the DMK) by pointing out that there was no precedence in the past that a Chairman, belonging to another party, had displayed the photograph of a Chief Minister who belonged to the main opposition party. They justified the Chairman's decision to put the resolution on vote, as there was no order or direction that the photograph of the sitting Chief Minister be displayed at the council hall or the Chairman's chamber. Normally, the photograph of the sitting Chief Minister would be displayed on the office premises only. On the display of the Chief Minister's photograph in the Chairman's cabin, they said it was left to the discretion of the Chairman and refused to accept the resolution. Earlier, when the issue of indiscriminate pasting of posters, especially obscene posters near schools and colleges in the town, was raised by the ward 30 councillor, K.A. Senguttuvan, the Chairman assured that steps would be initiated soon. When Mr. Senguttuvan said the recently-installed traffic signal at Moongil Mandapam (at the junction of Vallal Bakthavatsalam Salai and Gandhi Salai) only created traffic jam, especially during peak hours, Mr. Arumugam said such issues could be discussed at the traffic improvement meeting to be convened by the Superintendent of Police, K. Prem Kumar.
