CHENNAI, JULY 26. Women are able to motivate people to save better than men. That is why there are 21,000 women agents out of 36,000 small savings agents in Tamil Nadu, said T. Murthy, Commissioner of Small Savings. Participating in the Pay Roll Savings Day celebrations organised by the Office of the Accountant-General here on Friday, he said, in 2002-03 the target for postal small savings in Tamil Nadu was Rs. 2,500 crores and a collection of Rs. 2,903 crores was achieved. This year, the target was Rs. 4,500 crores and by June, the savings was Rs. 983 crores, double the amount saved during the corresponding period last year, he said. By giving awards to companies that contributed to maximum Pay Roll Savings, the highest deposit-holders could be identified and presented with an award to act as an incentive to others. The evening began with a song by the staff of the AG's office on small savings, composed by Welfare Officer, C.G. Sathyanarayan. B. Raju Babu, Regional Director of National Savings Institute, said the Pay Roll Savings Scheme was an arrangement under which an employee asks the employer to deduct a fixed sum from the monthly salary and deposit it in any National Savings Scheme. M. Karunanithi, Deputy Accountant-General, AG's Office said Tamil Nadu had 11,800 small savings groups. Awards were given to Mohammed Amjat, Personnel Officer, Taj Coromandel; S. Chandrakumar, Deputy Secretary, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission; and K. Thanasekharan, Group Leader, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Tondiarpet, for model pay roll savings group for the year 2003-04. Merit certificates were given to 10 members of staff of AG's office and to S. Sebastian of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission; Muthiah, Welfare Officer, Taj Coromandel; and Thanasekharan, Metropolitan Transport Corporation. P. Shanmugam, Deputy Director of National Savings and B. Selvakumar, Director of Postal Services, participated.
