GULBARGA, JULY 27. Fifteen tonnes of rice was seized in the Gogi Police Station limits on Tuesday. According to the police, the rice, meant for distribution under the food-for-work programme, was being smuggled to Solapur in Maharashtra. The Superintendent of Police, Ramachandra Rao, said that based on a tip-off from Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha, the police gave chase to the lorry in which the rice was being smuggled and a Tata Sumo vehicle following it. A rice dealer, the drivers of the two vehicles and another person were arrested in this connection. He said the main accused, Marthand Hiregouda, a contractor, had escaped. Police teams had been sent to nearby villages to arrest him. Investigation was on to identify all those involved in the racket, including officials.
A mystery
It is a mystery how foodgrains meant for the programme were stored in private houses converted into godowns. Dr. Rao said the police also raided two houses, converted into godowns in Gogi Police Station limits, and seized 40 quintals of rice and 148 quintals of wheat illegally stored there. These foodgrains were also destined to be smuggled to Maharashtra. He said the arrested dealer, who had accused Hiregouda of selling the rice to him, said it was being taken to Solapur to be sold in the open market. Dr. Rao said today's seizure was the sixth this year. In the earlier raids, 112 quintals of rice and 32 quintals of wheat illegally transported in a lorry were seized at Madanhipparga in Aland taluk in February; 204 quintals of foodgrains at Shahapur in May; 85 quintals of rice from a lorry at Jewargi; another lorry-load of rice being smuggled to Maharashtra at Sedam; and foodgrains valued at Rs 11.4 lakhs at Malkhed in Sedam taluk during July. The zilla panchayat had suspended two gram panchayat secretaries in connection with the seizure at Malkhed.
