Park maintenance Sir, It is welcome that 108 parks have been added to the list of notified parks under the Tamil Nadu Parks, Playfields and Open Space (Preservation and Regulation) Act, 1959. ( The Hindu , July 21). Many notified parks are in a degraded state, or have been encroached upon, or have disappeared. Recently we conducted a survey of the notified parks in the State. To our dismay, we found that many had vanished. In Nagercoil, two notified parks have disappeared, and the maintenance of Sir CPR Sashdiapurthy Municipal Park has been handed over to a private party, who uses it for screening films to make money. We request the Government to review the status of all notified parks and evict encroachments. The Supreme Court has termed the parks the "lungs of the city' and the `gift of God'. R.S.Lal Moahn, Conservation of Nature Trust, Nagercoil. High Court Bench Sir, __ The opening of the High Court Bench in Madurai has put an end to the unreasonable wrangle over the issue. The Bench will benefit the people of the southern districts, ease the burden on the High Court in Chennai and help in the speedy disposal of cases. Y.S. Kadakshamani, Madurai. II Sir, Kudos to the Chief Justice of Madras High Court for his dynamism in commissioning the Bench. He demonstrated professionalism throughout. Applications were received before the inauguration, and cases were taken up immediately. From Monday, he himself conducts the proceedings, along with his colleagues. His concern for litigants of the southern districts is laudable. Barnes Dhanaswami, Madurai. Encroachment eviction Sir, Encroachment eviction is an important task before the Sivakasi municipality. Despite several announcements about the removal of encroachments from poromboke land, nothing has happened so far. Encroachments should be evicted before monsoon, so that development works could be carried out without any hitch. T. Nagarajan, Sivakasi. Funds for library Sir, "Arivoli iyakkam" volunteers have set up a library at Vazhavallan. This library attracts both children and elders. The library needs money to buy more dailies and books. A request has already been sent to the Tuticorin Collector. I hope he will act soon. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Tuticorin. Use ring road Sir, Crores of rupees were spent on laying a ring road in Madurai to avoid traffic congestion in the city. But, of late, all buses bound for the southern destinations use the arterial roads, leading to traffic congestion, especially at Simmakkal and Palanganatham. Will the Corporation persuade the operators to use the ring road? V. Kanthimathynathan, Tirunelveli. Metal road needed Sir, Residents of Nethaji Nagar and Sivagirippatti suffer in the absence of a good metal road. A metal road has been laid from Cheran-Jeeva Nagar to the entrance of Nethaji Nagar. In this area, a mud road has been laid, and those who use vehicles are put to hardship. I hope the authorities concerned will do the needful. A. Anupriyadharshini, Palani. Fire safety measures Sir, The recent fire at a Kumbakonam school could have been avoided, had the school had asbestos roofs. Hereafter, children must never be accommodated in classrooms with thatched roofs. Schools and marriage halls should be directed to keep fire extinguishers. The Government should bring in legislation to provide safeguards for school children, and schools that violate the safety norms should be firmly dealt with. M.S. Sankaran, Palani. Passengers' woes Sir, Bus passengers bound for southern destinations from Madurai are made to wait at Tirumangalam unnecessarily. The narrow lane near the bus stand is controlled by the timekeepers, who make a lot of fuss. Hence, buses should be allowed to halt on the main road opposite the bus stand. No bus originates from Srivilliputtur for Shencottah, Madurai and Virudhunagar. Buses originating from Rajapalayam and Madurai are always crowded. Private operators should be allowed to operate services from Srivilliputtur to these destinations. A. Subramanian, Rajapalayam. Train service Sir, It is good news to the people of the southern districts that the broad gauge line laid between Rajapalayam and Tenkasi has been cleared for traffic by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Pranab Kumar Sen. The Railway Ministry has agreed to introduce an express train between Shencottah and Chennai after the completion of gauge conversion between Tenkasi and Shencottah. But the railways can introduce an express train from Tenkasi to Chennai Egmore, and it can be extended to Shencottah later. D. Rajaram, Madurai.
