Red sanders seized, one arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, JULY 27. Sleuths attached to the Tirupati wildlife management circle seized a large number of red sanders at Pandurangavaripalle on the Rangampet-Ithepalle road near here on Tuesday. The logs loaded on a Matador vehicle (TN 23 7559), were valued at Rs.2 lakhs. Acting on a tip-off, the guards, led by the range officer, M. Krishnaiah, confronted the vehicle, when the three inmates tried to run away on sighting them. Chandrasekhar Reddy of the nearby Chinnagottigallu, the key person believed to be behind the racket, and the driver, Logu, a resident of Ranipet in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, were absconding, while the cleaner S. Ramu of Kaniyambadi (TN) was caught. Ramu told the forest officials that one Mohan of Santhapet in Chittoor had brokered the deal. The public can inform the forest officials of such illegal activities at the phone numbers 94407 54116, 94408 10304 or 0877-2282760.

Another smuggler held

Our Cuddapah staff reporter writes: The Rayachoti police arrested a red sander smuggler, Keerthipati Krishnam Raju (36), of Krishnanagar in Tsundupalle mandal and an advocate of Rayachoti, Thota Venkatadri (30), after the forest officials seized the red sander logs weighing about six tonnes.

The Rajampet Divisional Forest Officer, B. Sunder, told a press conference at Rajampet that Krishnam Raju, who was arrested several times for smuggling the valuable red sanders from the Tsundupalle and Rayavaram areas in Rayachoti constituency, was detained under the Preventive Detention Act by him.

He was sentenced to one-year imprisonment and was released on June 22 by the A.P. High Court.

Two weeks after his release, Krishnam Raju resumed smuggling and along with Venkatadri, kept red sander stocks ready for transport in Saipai forest.

The DFO said that the Rayachoti police arrested Venkatadri and Krishnam Raju from the former's house.
