Collector's pat

for NSS agents

NELLORE: The district Collector, B. Rajasekhar, has patted the officials of Small Savings Agencies, for mopping up Rs. 29 crores for the year 2003, as against the target of Rs. 19 crores.

Addressing a gathering of agents at the Golden Jubilee Hall, here on Monday, the official handed over incentives to agents and said that the message of public money being safe in Government securities, compared to private banks, should be carried among the masses.

House burgled

NELLORE: Unidentified culprits entered a house in Jagannatharaopet area of Atmakur town on Monday and took away valuables and cash worth Rs. 1.50 lakhs after allegedly threatening the inmates. Police `Clues' team visited the place and investigation is on.

Dharna staged

CHITTOOR: Employees of Balaji and V.S.N. hatcheries staged a dharna before the Collector office here on Tuesday demanding the authorities to increase their salaries and stop harassment. They also sought provision of E.S.I., PF and group insurance facilities to them. The CITU leaders -- Chaitanya, Kumar Reddy and Surendra - participated.

Students take

out rally

MADANAPALLE: Students of the local Government Degree College for Women, under the auspices of the SFI, took out a rally demanding solution to their problems. They later submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Collector, Smitha Das. The SFI district secretary, M.C. Reddeppa Reddy, sought exemption of development fees.

Yeleru panel resumes work

Hyderabad: The Justice Somasekhara Commission of Inquiry into Yeleru land scandal, which was revived by the Government recently, resumed its work on Tuesday. Mr. Justice B.K. Somasekhara occupied a portion of National Hydrology Project building at Chintal Basti here.

The commission had finalised 90 per cent of the report when it was wound up by the previous Government. The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, said the report contained startling revelations.

Bandh in Mydukur peaceful

CUDDAPAH: Bandh in Mydukur town demanding maintenance of minimum drawal down level (MDDL) of 854 ft in Srisailam reservoir to release water to KC Canal and scrapping G.O. 69 which reduced the MDDL to 834 ft passed off peacefully on Tuesday.

The Jala Sadhana Samithi convenor, M.J. Subbarami Reddy, the TDP leader, Redyam Venkata Subba Reddy, and the former Mydukur Water Users Association president, B.V. Venkataramana, threatened to wage an intensive agitation if water was not released from Srisailam reservoir to KC Canal soon. Canal ayacutdars were steeped in debts due to drought and non-release of water from Srisailam reservoir for three successive years, they alleged.

Two held on extortion charge

KARIMNAGAR: The Two Town police arrested two suspected activists affiliated to the Organisation for Protection of Democratic Rights (OPDR) on the charge of extortion here on Tuesday. R. Prakash, SI, said five persons -- Venkatadri, Venu, Srihari, P. Ramesh and S. Kishan -- had issued a threatening letter to a Government engineer demanding party fund for organising a party meeting in Karimnagar.

The engineer had assured to provide the sum and alerted the police in the meanwhile. When Ramesh and Kishan visited the house of the engineer to collect the amount, the police arrested them.

People's War emissaries' plea

HYDERABAD: Emissaries of the People's War for talks with the Government -- Varavara Rao, Gadar and Kalyan Rao -- have appealed to people to make success the proposed public meeting to pay tributes to slain naxalites at Warangal on July 28 at 4 p.m.In a statement here, they said a memorial being constructed at Mogilicherla village for naxalites who lost lives in the movement would be inaugurated the same day.

400 kg ganja leaves seized

TIRUPATI: The M.R. Palle police, assisted by the Blue Colts, seized 400 kg of ganja leaves worth Rs.4.5 lakhs along with a car bearing number AP 28 6064 at agricultural market yard here on Tuesday.

According to the police, who were on their regular rounds, the inmate of the car parked the vehicle near bypass road and ran away on sighting them. The police found the ganja leaves stuffed in five gunny bags and a couple of plastic bags.

28 quintals of sajja seed seized

CUDDAPAH: Agricultural officials seized 28 quintals of sajja seed from the offices of Navata Transport at Mydukur and Duvvur on complaints that seeds purchased from farmers were being packed into company bags and sold at higher prices, the Mandal Agricultural Officer, Peddi Reddy, said on Tuesday.

The seeds, suspected to be brought from Madanapalle in Chittoor district, were being sold as company seeds by packing them in empty original seed bags, he said. Notices were issued to Navata Transport, he said.

Two farmers end lives

ADILABAD: Kusve Ramulu (50), a farmer from Kuntala mandal headquarters village, committed suicide early on Tuesday by hanging himself in his house. Reports said he incurred debts of over Rs. 1 lakh owing to successive failure of crops. Another, G. Paulaiah (35), committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Vempenta in Pamulapadu mandal of Kurnool district. According to reports, the farmer borrowed loans of Rs. 60,000 and suffered financial losses.

Cloud-seeding exercise on

Hyderabad: The cloud-seeking operations continued for the fifth day on Tuesday, this time over Doranala in Prakasam district.

The operation was between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Soon after the seed was dumped on the clouds, there was drizzle in the area and it was "confirmed" by the district Collector, the Secretary for Rain Shadow Area Department, M.G. Gopal, said. Detailing the results of Monday's operations, he said the gain had gone up to a maximum of 30.2 mm as at Kallur in Kurnool district.

Release of aged prisoners

under study: Jana Hyderabad: The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said here on Tuesday that the Government would sympathetically consider the plea for releasing aged prisoners on the occasion of the Independence Day. Speaking at a meeting with legislators, he said the then Government had framed guidelines for release of prisoners in 1997.

These guidelines would be examined to see whether they could be applied for releasing the aged prisoners.

The meeting was attended by T. Veerabhadram (CPI-M), Chada Venkata Reddy (CPI), Kommireddy Ramulu (Janata), Mumtaz Kham (MIM) and others.

Office-bearers elected

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh College Teachers' Association selected 28 members as officer-bearers for the term 2004-2006 during its elections recently. While G. Venkat Reddy was elected chairman, G. Sridhar Reddy became secretary-general. The vice-chairpersons are Venkatramaiah, D. Vijaya Prasad, S.R.K. Prasad and A. Leela Mohan Rao while the secretaries are A. Jayanthi, K. Satyanarayana Rao, Basava Raju and B. Ramchander Rao. K. Venkata Krishna, A. Satyanarayana, A. Sri Laxmi and V. Ramana Murthy were elected joint secretaries while 14 others would be executive members, according to a press release.
