`250 Agra monuments significant'

NEW DELHI,
JULY 27.
The Supreme Court today declared all the 250 Archaeological Survey of India protected monuments within the Taj trapezium as "significant" monuments and said that no brick kilns could be set up within 20 km of these monuments.
A three-Judge Bench comprising Justice Ruma Pal, Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice S.H. Kapadia passed the order during the hearing of a public interest litigation by environmentalist lawyer M.C. Mehta seeking protection of the Taj Mahal and other monuments from environmental and industrial pollution.
Even as the petition was pending, the court had sought a report from the ASI on the issue. The ASI filed its report in March stating that all ASI protected monuments should be declared as significant monuments.
