New Delhi. JULY 27. The Nationalist Congress Party today lent its voice to the demand of the Left parties for a coordination committee to facilitate the smooth functioning of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre. "We fully support the demand for an effective mechanism for prior consultations among the constituents and the Government on all important issues," said the party general secretary, D.P. Tripathi. The NCP leader clarified that he was not blaming the Congress, and hoped that all the major parties would agree to the demand, now that it was made. "Differences are inherent in coalitions, but discussions and debates are essential to evolve a consensus." The NCP leader said the UPA was qualitatively different from the National Democratic Alliance. The Central Government would last its full term. "The UPA is an ideology-based alliance while the NDA was purely power-oriented." The NCP criticised the NDA's decision to boycott the parliamentary committees and appealed to it to reconsider its position. "These committees play a vital role and by boycotting them the Opposition is showing total disrespect to the verdict of the people and parliamentary practices."
