UDHAGAMANDALAM, JULY 27. Come September, the Ooty Lake, one of the tourist attractions here, will have a new boathouse. Work on the wooden semi-permanent structure on the western side of the lake at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs is almost over. Official sources told The Hindu that finishing touches were being given and the facility would be ready by July end. It was expected to be commissioned after the Adi month. There would be four wooden jetties from which 30 new pedal boats would be operated. Now there were 90 motor, pedal (including swan-shaped ones) and rowboats.
Safety measures
There would be a small restaurant and a public convenience and facility to park 50 cars and motorcycles. Buses would not be allowed near the boathouse. Claiming that the additional facility and the increased number of boats would not lead to congestion or accidents, the sources said adequate safety measures would be put in place.
Fall in revenue
Thanks to unfavourable weather and Lok Sabha election, the revenue fell by 30 per cent this summer. It was hoped that during the second season more number of tourists would flock to the lake. Though the visitors were satisfied with the maintenance of the lake, they regret that the town's sewage continued to enter the lake through the main channel.
