Prepare merit list before admissions, Subramani panel tells consortium

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 27. The permanent committee for the conduct of entrance examination for private professional institutions has directed the Consortium of Self-financing Professional Arts and Science Colleges to prepare a common merit list of candidates in the descending order with particulars. Admissions (to engineering courses) should be made only after the committee received the merit list and that too as per court orders, the committee said in its July 26 proceedings.

The committee, with Justice S.S.Subramani as its Chairman, said any admission violating the directions would not be recognised and would be treated as admission made dehors merit and the college would be proceeded against.

`Follow court rulings'

The committee cited the August 14, 2003 Supreme Court judgment in the Islamic Academy of Education case and the July 13 Madras High Court judgment and the consortium's May 17 representation. In view of the Supreme Court judgment, the consortium was permitted to admit students only after preparing the merit list. The Madras High Court judgment stated how the merit list should be prepared in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Government eligibility conditions. The consortium agreed to follow the method, adopted by Anna University, of admission as per the rank list.

Hence, the committee directed the consortium to prepare a merit list containing the serial number, the candidate's name and roll number in the CET (hall ticket) and marks, roll number in the qualifying examination, marks obtained in the relevant subjects and the candidate's rank in the merit list. It should also give details of the linguistic or religious minority to which the candidate belongs.

The consortium should also inform all colleges, which opted for the test conducted by it, to exercise the option as directed in the committee's June 1, 2004 order.
