The Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, on Tuesday announced that advisory committees headed by joint Collectors would be constituted to supervise the maintenance of the left and right canals of Nagarjunasagar. He made this announcement after representatives of various political parties drew his attention to problems faced by farmers in maintaining the canals and paying power bills for lift irrigation schemes. At present, the right canal is maintained by the State Government and the left by the farmers. The Minister told reporters that the Government would now maintain the left canal as well. The advisory committees, which would consist of officials and non-officials, would locally tackle the problems relating to maintenance without running to Hyderabad for everything. He said the Central assistance would be sought for executing new lift irrigation schemes.
