NEW DELHI, JULY 27 . Punjab today sought further compensation from the Centre for farmers in border areas who have been unable to cultivate their fields due to the laying of landmines and occupation of land for other purposes by the army since full mobilisation was ordered in late 2001. The Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, met the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, here today to seek further Central assistance of Rs 33.8 crores. Capt. Singh said he had sought the Defence Minister's intervention because the army was taking time in finalising the modality of payment. Besides, payment of compensation to victims of land mine blasts too has been tardy. Mr. Mukherjee is also the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab affairs and Capt. Singh said the Minister had promised to visit Punjab soon. The Centre has so far sanctioned about Rs. 200 crores as crop compensation and rental to the state governments of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat for the damage that occurred to the crop due to occupation of the land.
