SRINAGAR, JULY 27 . Veteran National Conference leader and MLA Abdur Rahim Rather has been unanimously elected leader of the party in the State Legislative Assembly. Mr Rather fills the vacancy created by the death of Mohiuddin Shah last month. The National Conference has 27 members in the 87-member Assembly with the status of the single largest party. His election ended controversy over the leadership of the party in the Assembly as also the speculation that Shia clergyman Moulvi Iftikhar Ansari or Ali Mohammad Sagar may take Late Shah's place. However, the party rank and file had supported Mr Rather's candidature and warned the leadership against electing Mr Ansari, who they said "is an outsider and had played a dirty role in dethroning the Farooq Government in 1984". Mr Ansari and three other members did not attend the meeting.
