Bandh observed in Bagalkot

By Our Staff Correspondent

BAGALKOT, JULY 27. A bandh was observed in this partially submerged town on Tuesday to protest against the sluggish progress of the Rs. 638-crore special package to rehabilitate the displaced families.

Hundreds of activists, led by the president of Bagalkot Punarutthana Yuva Horata Samiti, Ashok Limbavali, gathered at Vallabhbhai Chowk and took out a procession. They also staged a dharna in front of the Assistant Commissioner's office.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Limbavali said that the rehabilitation package was being implemented at a snail's pace. The authorities had issued the initial notice under Section 4(1) of the Land Acquisition Act in November 2003. The acquisition procedure should have been completed within 11 months from the date of first notice, failing which the entire process had to be started afresh, he said.

The leaders said that the low-lying bridges at Karihalla, Maharudrappanahalla, and another at Bagalkot Cement Factory were inundated whenever water level at the Alamatti Dam rose above 518 metres and cut off the main roads linking the town.

The proposal to construct bridges at a higher level had been submitted but nothing had been done in that regard.

In a joint meeting, the members of the samiti and the Chamber of Commerce decided to take an all-party delegation to Bangalore to urge the Government to initiate action in this regard. The agitators handed over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to the Deputy Commissioner, K.S. Prabhakar.

Revanasidda Swamiji of Teekinamath Samsthana, who is the honorary president of the samiti, Veeranna Halkurki, K.D. Bagi, Sarnadagouda, Chandrashekhar Rathod, and Prakash Bargi, members of the samiti, participated.
