CHENNAI, JULY 27. The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 177 crores to implement the Contingency Plan to tackle the drinking water scarcity in the city, the Finance Minister, C. Ponnaiyan, informed the Assembly today. Seeking approval for the first supplementary estimates 2004-05, he said that of this, Rs. 14 crores has been sanctioned as additional equity and Rs. 67.5 crores as capital grants to Metrowater. A sum of Rs. 81.5 crores has been included in the supplementary estimates under the demand for the Municipal Administration and Water Supply department.
IT expressway
Mr. Ponnaiyan said the Government sanctioned Rs. 43 crores towards acquisition of land for the six-lane IT expressway between Madhya Kailash and Mamallapuram. The PWD Minister, O. Paneerselvam, said all works on the Inner Ring Road except in the south sector have been completed. In the southern sector, road under bridgework and 4.4 km of roadwork have been completed. Land acquisition is in an advanced stage for the remaining five km. The budget estimate for 2004-05 is Rs. 15 crores.
Road improvement
A massive Rs. 370-crore programme aimed at improving roads in 2004-05 in the Chennai Metropolitan Area is under the consideration of the Government. The proposals include widening 45.7 km of single lane road to double lane; widening 123.7 km of double lane road to four lane; widening 11.73 km of double lane road to six lane; widening 18.25 km of four lane road to six lane and strengthening of roads, remodelling centre medians, providing grade separators and land acquisition.
