BJP lacks policy on river waters, says CPI(M)

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, JULY 27. Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of lacking any policy on river waters at the national or State level, the Krishna district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has alleged that the BJP is trying to provoke regional feelings in the name of release of water to the Krishna delta.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the CPI (M) district secretary, V. Umamaheswara Rao, wondered as to how the BJP leaders of coastal districts were demanding release of water to the delta while their counterparts in Telangana and Rayalaseema were opposing the same.

"The BJP leaders of Karnataka on their part mounted pressure on the Karnataka Government against releasing water from Alamatti reservoir to Andhra Pradesh.

This only reflects the double standards adopted by the BJP," he said adding that the people were watching the "opportunistic" attitude of the BJP.

`BJP exposed'

Stating that the people would not tolerate the parties that tried to gain political mileage by raking up regional issues, Mr. Rao said it was unfortunate that the BJP failed to recognize the fact even after the people rejected it in the recent elections. The BJP's true colours became evident with the attitude it adopted in the State Government's struggle to secure the release of water from Karnataka.

The stand taken by the Government of the neighbouring State against release of water was also not proper, he said demanding that the Karnataka Government immediately release water in view of the hardship faced by the people here.
