BANGALORE, JULY 27. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will asphalt roads, strengthen drains and build sidewalks on priority in Gandhinagar and surrounding areas, the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, said on Tuesday. During his inspection of Gandhinagar, the Mayor said the area, an important business hub of the city, was the main source of revenue for the BMP. "The area has a lot of business establishments, and the revenue from property tax and advertisements is higher from here compared to any other area. We will initiate measures to improve the civic conditions, including roads, drains and sidewalks here," he said.
Drain to be covered
The storm water drain near Bhashyam Park would be covered by slabs to create space for vehicle parking for public offices in the area, the Mayor said. Residents informed the Mayor that the old drain running along the railway line in Kumara Park frequently overflowed and caused water logging. The drain would be desilted and strengthened at the earliest, he said and asked the BMP engineers to prepare a plan to take up the work immediately. The Mayor expressed displeasure over the way the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) had restored Seshadripuram Main Road after laying cables. He said BESCOM had flouted the road restoration protocol by digging roads that were neatly asphalted. Besides, the restoration had not been done properly, he added.
Notices to BESCOM
The Mayor asked the jurisdictional BMP engineers to issue notices to the officials concerned in BESCOM to get the road restored. When the Mayor visited V.V. Giri Colony in Gandhinagar, the residents complained of supply of contaminated water in the area. He directed the health officials to take water samples from the area and get them tested. He assured the residents of P.K. Quarters on Risaldar Street in Seshadripuram that measures would be initiated to provide them with new dwellings. Earlier, the residents told the Mayor that the existing houses, built 30 years ago, had become unfit for habitation. The Gandhinagar MLA, Dinesh Gundu Rao, the area corporator, Vasanta Kumari, the Deputy Commissioner (West), Parshwanath, and other officials accompanied the Mayor.
