Autorickshaw driver taken to task

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 27. Taking a serious note of alleged misbehaviour and manhandling of a passenger by an errant autorickshaw driver on Aurobindo Marg in South Delhi two days ago, the State Transport Department has decided to adopt a unique way of making out an example of the driver as well as the vehicle driven by him in order to ensure that such incidents do not occur in future.

Not only has the Transport Department gone ahead and cancelled the driving licence of the driver, it has also cancelled the vehicle's permit.

The Department has asked the police to drive the autorickshaw straight to its Fitness Centre at Burari in North Delhi. It has decided to impound the autorickshaw.

Unlike in the past when the impounded vehicle was released after payment of fine or penalty imposed by the Department, it has been decided that this autorickshaw would not be released on any payment.

The autorickshaw would be put on display at this centre with a message that it had been impounded and not released due to the alleged misbehaviour and manhandling of the women passenger by the driver, the Secretary (Transport), Rajiv Talwar informed.

Mr. Talwar said in order to set an example for others, this autorickshaw would not be released. He said it was unfortunate and shocking that the driver of this autorickshaw had indulged in such unruly behaviour and manhandled a woman passenger, Priyanka Bose, whose only fault was that she insisted on going by the meter reading.

Mr. Talwar said such behaviour would not be tolerated and warned that such errant drivers would have to face penal action in future.
