This Day That Age
Britain and Egypt have reached an agreement on the evacuation of British troops from the Suez Canal Zone. The agreement was initialled in Cairo on July 27. Chief points of the agreement are: Evacuation of British troops from the Canal Zone within twenty months, reactivation of the base in the event of an attack on the Arab States or Turkey, the duration of the new agreement to be seven years, and the base to be maintained by a British civilian contracting firm. The agreement will recognise that the Suez (Maritime) Canal, which is an integral part of Egypt, is a waterway economically, commercially and strategically of international importance and will express the determination of both parties to uphold the 1888 Convention guaranteeing the freedom of navigation of the Canal. Mr. Anthony Head, British War Minister, who came to Cairo specially to negotiate the settlement, met the Egyptian team led by the Prime Minister, Lt.-Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser at formal talks. The Egyptian Premier later declared that with the conclusion of the agreement "a new era of friendly relations opens between Egypt and Britain and the Western countries. We want to get rid of the hatred in our hearts and start building up our relations with Britain on a solid basis of mutual trust and confidence which has been lacking for the past seventy years." British troops have been in Egypt since 1852 when they landed as part of an Anglo-French force to protect European interests against a nationalist revolt. The French were later recalled. The British remained to provide protection for the Canal, the transport route opened in 1869.
