CUDDAPAH, JULY 28. Another school disaster of the magnitude of Kumbakonam could have happened when a 50-foot-long verandah collapsed in the Municipal Urdu High School, but fortunately there were no casualties. The 350-odd students came out of their classrooms during the interval at around 11.30 a.m., and went into their classrooms when the bell rang, when the verandah collapsed with a loud bang. The teachers who were in an adjoining rest room, preparing to go to their classes, ran helter-skelter, on hearing the defeaning sound. The students had a providential escape.
It was in the making
The school building, built in 1924 , was badly damaged and on the verge of collapse. The dilapidated condition of the school building was brought to the notice of the Cuddapah Municipal Commissioner, S. Satchidananda Verma, on July 19, when the school headmaster submitted a representation to him. However, no formal inspection took place. The teachers and parents heaved a sigh of relief on learning that the mishap did not cause any casualty. A major mishap was averted now, but the school needed reconstruction or major repairs, said the incharge headmaster, Abdul Jabbar. After the mishap, the Municipal Commissioner visited the school and advised the teachers to run classes in classrooms that were not badly damaged, or in nearby schools.
