Rajani suicide: protests continue

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, JULY 28. Three separate demonstrations were led to the Scheduled Communities Welfare Office at the civil station complex here this morning demanding the resignation of the Minister for the Welfare of backward and Scheduled Communities, M.A. Kuttappan, in the wake of the suicide by the engineering college student, Rajani Anand.

The demonstrations were organised by the SFI, the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha (KPMS) and pro-Left women's organisations.

Protest turns violent

The demonstration led by the KPMS turned violent as some of those taking part in the demonstration threw stones at the Scheduled Communities Welfare Office, situated on the third floor of the civil station complex.

However, the situation was brought under control by the KPMS leaders leading the march.

The glass panes of three windows were shattered in the stone throwing. The march was blocked by the police at the entrance to the complex.

Less turnout

The SFI march was also blocked by the police. The SFI had declared the march much in advance, anticipating that educational institutions would function today.

However, with the declaration that educational institutions would remain closed for the week, there was not much of a turnout for the SFI demonstration, which was also in protest against the educational policies of the UDF Government.

Pro-Left women's organisations also organised a march to the Scheduled Communities Welfare Office demanding the resignation of the Minister, Mr. Kuttappan.

The march was led by the All India Democratic Women's Association leader, Prasanna Earnest, the secretary of the Kerala Mahila Sangham, Remani George, and the Kollam District Panchayat president, Aisha Potti.

This march was also blocked by the police in front of the collectorate.
