Couple found

dead

CUDDAPAH: A young couple was found dead near the railway track at Mantapampalle in Nandalur mandal on Wednesday.

They were aged between 20 and 25. The two, whose identity was not known, were suspected to have been either run over by Navjeevan Express at around 11 a.m. today, or done to death.

Union Minister

visiting Nellore

NELLORE: Panabaka Lakshmi, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, would be on a five-day tour of Nellore district commencing from July 30. Her programmes include, laying of foundation stone for municipal shopping complex at Dycus Road on August 1 and a visit to Red Cross Society and Cancer Detection Centre on August 3.

Girl dies of

brain fever

KURNOOL: A nine-year-old girl, Laxmi, died of Japanese Encephalitis at Julepalli village in Gospadu mandal of Kurnool district on Wednesday. The girl died while undergoing treatment in at a hospital in Nandyal.

Cloud-seeding

KURNOOL: Cloud-seeding was undertaken in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts on Wednesday. According to information by weather monitoring station at Nandyal, the seeding was undertaken in Kurnool, Kallur, Yemmiganur and Kodumur mandals of Kurnool district and Alampur, Yerravalli and Itikyala mandals of Mahabubnagar district.

Suicide bid

TIRUPATI: Amid high drama, an auto driver doused himself with kerosene and attempted suicide in full public view near "Srinivasam,'' the TTD's mega amenities complex here on Wednesday. He was rescued and admitted to the Ruia hospital with 90 per cent burns. His condition is stated to be critical.

Free treatment for

viral fever sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association on Wednesday demanded supply of drinking water on a war footing and free treatment in both private and Government hospitals to those affected by viral fever in Prakasam, Kurnool, Nellore, Karimnagar and Khammam districts. It wanted payment of ex gratia and free supply of 20 kg rice to the families of those killed.

P. Ramayya, MLA and president of the association, and B. Venkat, general secretary, in a statement attributed the outbreak of the fever to the Government's failure to take remedial measures and to supply safe drinking water to people.

Muslims plan `padayatra'

hailing GO on quota

CUDDAPAH: A `padayatra' will be undertaken from Cuddapah to Hyderabad from August 9 to 15 hailing the 5 per cent reservation provided to Muslims by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, according to the Muslim Welfare Society president, Syed Anwar Basha.

Addressing a press conference, he demanded that the Centre grant an additional 5 per cent reservation to Muslims.

Participants in the `padayatra' would call on the Chief Minister on August 15, he said.

Liquor seized; one held

Kakinada: The Sub-divisional Prohibition and Excise Officer, A.V.N.S. Appa Rao, along with the Excise Inspector, K. Chittibabu, and the Sub-Inspector, B. Venkateswarlu, on a tip-off, intercepted a country boat in the salt creak in the Yetimoga area on the town outskirts on Wednesday and seized 260 litres of ID liquor transported from neighbouring Yanam.

They also arrested Sangadi Satyavatai, who is bringing it for sale. The boat owners -- Rajala Rajababu and Rajala Satyavati -- gave a slip to the excise officials. Satyavati was produced before the excise court.

Inflows from Alamatti

Hyderabad: The Srisailam reservoir received inflows from Alamatti on Wednesday. Alamatti and Narayanapur dams in Karnataka are full, but outflows to Karnataka continue to be negligible.

Award for young scientist

HYDERABAD: Umesh C Kulshrestha, scientist, analytical chemistry division, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, has been selected for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) 2004 Young Scientist Award.

Dr. Kulshrestha has been chosen for the prestigious award for his outstanding R&D contributions in the fields of `earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences'. The award will be presented at the CSIR headquarters, New Delhi, on September 26, according to a release.

YSR releases CD on

Krishna pushkarams

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Wednesday released a CD on the Krishna pushkarams, `Dheera sameere, Krishna there'. It was brought out by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Vijayawada.

The Minister for Endowments, M. Satyanarayana Rao, and the Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, and the department officials were present. The pushkarams, commencing on August 28 in the districts of Mahbubnagar, Kurnool, Nalgonda, Krishna and Guntur, will conclude on September 8. The CD shows the temples in Krishna district and places of tourist interest on the bank of the river Krishna.

Student commits suicide

VISAKHAPATNAM: An Intermediate first year (MPC group) student of a corporate college allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a ceiling fan in his hostel room at Gopalapatnam in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Kanakala Arvind (16), son of Viswanatha Gupta of Kotabommali mandal in Srikakulam district, took the extreme step as he was not able to cope with the requirement of studying the course in English medium.

Sports meet: MLAs given prizes

Hyderabad: The Speaker, K. R. Suresh Reddy, on Wednesday gave away prizes to MLAs who won in various events in the legislators' sports meet.

Speaking at a function in the old Assembly Hall, Mr. Reddy complimented MLAs for participation in larger numbers and appreciated their spirit of competitiveness. He recalled that he was the captain of the MLAs' cricket team when it was first held but he could not participate this year.

Rain likely

HYDERABAD: Tuesday's low pressure area over the west central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood persists and may become well-marked, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here. Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 36 hours. Strong winds from westerly direction with speed reaching 45-50 kmph are likely along and off coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

Chief amounts of rainfall recorded in cms. during the last 24-hour period ended at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday are: Anakapalle - 6; Salur - 5; Parvathipuram - 4; Yellamanchili, Cumbam (Prakasam dist.) and Bobbili - 3 each and Koderu (West Godavari dist.) - 2.
