Railways save Rs. 423 cr.

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways gross earnings dipped by Rs. 327.41 crores during the first two months of the current financial year ended May 2004. The actual gross earnings were Rs. 6,919.44 crores against the budgetary target of Rs. 7,246.85 crores. However, it saved Rs. 423.63 crores in gross working expenses during the period. Compared to the budgetary target of Rs. 6,110.28 crores of gross working expenses, the actual expenditure was Rs. 5,686.65 crores.

According to the official data, the passenger traffic during the period increased by 24.34 millions. A total of 852.97 million passengers travelled by trains compared to 828.58 million passengers during the corresponding period of the previous year. — Our Special Correspondent
