HYDERABAD, JULY 28. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Wednesday suspended from the party the Chairman of the Anantapur Zilla Parishad, Jonna Suryanarayana, after he defied itss directive to resign from his post. The TDP had sought Mr. Suryanarayana's resignation after allegations of corruption, misbehaviour and favouring of those belonging to parties other the TDP were levelled against him. However, the reasons for Mr. Suryanarayana's suspension are said to be political, as he is allegedly veering towards the Congress, the party to which his brother, Jonna Ramaiah, who was elected from the Kadiri constituency, belongs.
Complaints by cadre
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the TDP general secretary, R. Prakash Reddy, and former Minister, K. Vijayarama Rao, explained that the disciplinary action against the ZP Chairman was based on a representation by ZPTC members, alleging that he was tarnishing the party's image in Anantapur district. Twenty-seven out of the 32 ZPTC members of the party had come to Hyderabad with the complaint.
`Show of defiance'
Following the representation, party leaders had asked Mr. Suryanarayana to resign. Mr. Suryanarayana faxed a resignation letter to the party and to the District Collector. But when the Collector sent him a note asking him to authenticate the signature on the letter, the ZP Chairman refused to oblige and went on a month's leave, they said. In reply to a question, the TDP leaders said Paritala Ravi, the party MLA from Penukonda who also faces allegations, was in a "different league." There was no need for disciplinary action against him, they said.
