Former police officers to recover Reliance mobile dues

By N. Ravi Kumar

CHENNAI, JULY 28. In a novel way of dealing with defaulting subscribers, Reliance Infocomm has recruited 45 former police officers in the rank of inspectors and above, including 16 retired deputy commissioners, to help recover dues.

The former police personnel form the second rung of the recovery chain formed by Reliance Infocomm, which claims to have a subscriber base of eight lakhs in the State. Private recovery agents are at the first and lawyers at the third levels.

The chain was established sometime ago and on its job to meet the July 31 deadline, within which time such subscribers opting for a settlement have the choice of switching over to pre-paid service.

Company insiders say the task for the team was cut out. After establishing that the defaulting subscriber made the calls, through the `calls made' data, the recovery agents are sent to seek the dues. If their efforts fail, the former police personnel are deployed and then the lawyers step in with a notice.

Apart from recovering the dues, some of which are several months old, the scheme would help the company weed out `bad' customers. Most of the defaulting subscribers, according to the sources, are those who opted for Reliance Infocomm's popular `Rs.501' scheme that bundled the handset cost into the post-paid package. The pack was targetted at the masses and found immediate acceptance from small time traders, vegetable and fruits vendors and autorickshaw drivers.

While details of the dues are not known, insiders in telecom industry say they are about 25 per cent. The recovery scheme offers a waiver for call charges disputed and proven by the subscribers and allows the defaulters to pay the rest in instalments.
