BANGALORE,
JULY 28.
The elderly woman was found murdered in her third floor flat on Vittal Mallya Road in Cubbon Park Police Station limits on Monday night.
The Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Alok Mohan, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the circumstantial evidence suggested the involvement of Vimala (20) of Chennai, who had joined Nandini Rao as a servant maid on Sunday.
"Vimala has gone missing after the murder," he said.
Nandini Rao's daughter, who stays in Chennai, had sent Vimala here to work at her mother's house, Mr. Mohan said. "We are searching for her here and we are not in the dark," he said.
Granddaughter ignorant
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), S. Parashiva Murthy, said Nandini Rao's daughter was ignorant about Vimala's antecedents. "Her maid in Chennai, through her friends, had introduced Vimala to her," he said.
After hitting the elderly woman on the head with a heavy weapon, the assailant made away with whatever was available in the flat.
Apart from the gold jewellery the victim was wearing, nothing else was missing from the house, Dr. Murthy said.
Body released
After autopsy, Nandini Rao's body was flown to Chennai on Tuesday. Nandini Rao was staying here with her granddaughter, who is a student of a business school in Koramangala. For the past few days, the girl had been staying with her friends in Koramangala, he said.
Chennai police help
Our Chennai Staff Reporter reports:
Crime Branch sources in Chennai said that a team from Bangalore city police, including a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector and a head constable has arrived in Chennai to investigate the murder.
The team conducted enquiries in T. Nagar, the sources said and added that some of the city police officers were assisting the personnel from Bangalore.
Based on clues given by the Bangalore police, computer-generated images of the suspect (Vimala) were taken and handed over to the team, the sources said.
The Bangalore police team is likely to visit the Crime Records Bureau to have a look at pictures of the suspects in the database.
