`Stress main cause for male infertility'

KOCHI, JULY 28. Stress has been identified as the foremost reason for male infertility in recent times, said P.D. Krishna Kumar, specialist in infertility management from Johore, Malaysia.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Lakeshore Fertility Centre here recently, Dr. Krishna Kumar pointed out that male infertility problems had been found in over 30 per cent cases in India, China and Malaysia. Exposure to industrial chemicals and smoking had been found to be some other causes for the rising infertility of males while hereditary problems constitute a small number too.

Sperm count was observed to have increased after prescribing a less stressful circumstance in quite a few cases where the infertility was stress-related. But when the stress was related to jobs which could not be changed, he said, managing the problem in laboratory became necessary.

Dr. Krishna Kumar said that while treatment of female infertility was easy, that of male infertility was difficult. Regarding the donation of sperm, egg and embryo, he said that the practice needed proper quarantineThe Minister of Fisheries and Excise, K.V. Thomas, inaugurated the new Centre at the hospital at a function presided by the Chairman of Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, M.A. Yousaf Ali. Prof. Thomas said that Kerala needs an outlook (for its growth).

The Managing Director of Lakeshore, Philip Augustine, welcomed the gathering. Sebastian Paul, MP; Dominic Presentation, MLA; the IMA president, K. Ajay Kumar; and the president of Cochin Gynaec Society, Sheela Shastri, spoke on the occasion.

Gynaecologist John Cherian, who heads the Fertility Centre, proposed a vote of thanks.
