Gulbarga
By Our Special Correspondent
GULBARGA, JULY 29. The local unit of the Janata Dal (United) held a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here today demanding that the investigation of the foodgrains scam be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). 0They said that the CBI would be able to unearth the truth and identify the guilty officials and politicians involved in diverting the foodgrains meant for the food-for-work programme to the market. Members of the Janata Dal (U) said that the Corps of Detectives (CoD), which was currently investigating the scam, was not competent to handle such a huge scam involving several crores of rupees, and that it was imperative that the investigation be handed over to the CBI. In a memorandum addressed to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, the Janata Dal (U) said that since the sale of the foodgrains meant for drought relief and employment generation works was going on for the past three years, and many former Ministers and legislators were involved, the State Government should hand over the investigation to the CBI. The memorandum said that the rice scam was not limited to Dakshina Kannada alone, and the series of seizures of foodgrains in Gulbarga was a pointer to the fact that officials and politicians were involved in the scam.
